Alles wissen bij verkoop?

Nervegas aka Jonathan Zdziarski waarschuwt dat je persoonlijke informatie kan worden gevonden op een iPhone na een verkoop op ebay of marktplaats (Het gaat hier om gebruikte iPhones). Zelfs na een volledige restore, waarbij Nervegas al zijn backups van de computer had gegooid, blijkt dat er veel persoonlijke informatie op de iPhone achterblijft. U bent gewaarschuwd!!

Many iPhone users have felt safe sending their phones into Apple or selling them on eBay with the feeling that their personal data and digital past have been erased by performing a restore. Think those embarrassing photos are gone for good? Think again. While the restore process takes long enough to make most people (including many well-respected iPhone developers) assume the "disk" stored in NAND memory is formatted, it actually isn't.

As part of my work on a forensics toolkit for the iPhone, I decided to test whether user data could survive a full restore in iTunes. There have been rumors floating around that the entire NAND is flashed to 0xFF when the device is restored, but this is untrue - this only occurs in a different part of the iPhone (the NOR), but not the NAND. To confirm this theory, I first deleted any backups of my device and then forced the iPhone into recovery mode. From there, I performed a full firmware restore of my iPhone, ensuring that no backups or syncing were performed. I then performed a basic recovery of the raw disk using the forensic toolkit I put together, and analyzed it. What I discovered was that deleted mail, contacts, and pretty much all of my other personal information was still residing in unallocated space on the device. My personal information was safe and sound, and available to anyone with the right skills to recover it.

What does this mean? This means that when you do a restore through iTunes, it is only the equivalent of performing a "Quick Format" on your iPhone. And for those of you who use "Erase all Content and Settings", this has even less of an effect, as it doesn't even destroy the file system. In both cases, all of the personal information that was sitting on the device prior to the erase or restore is still left sitting in the unallocated blocks of the iPhone's NAND memory. To make matters worse, the restore process is likely to restore the original operating system files over the same location as the old ones, meaning very little data is likely to be corrupted at all. Let this be a caution to everyone who sells used iPhones or sends their phone into Apple - you are releasing your personal data with it.

Weet iemand of ook je Gmail wachtwoord in je iPhone blijft staan na een restore???? En waar ik deze dan kan vinden uiteraard....

ik heb eergister noodgedwongen moet restoren, en nu weet ik mijn wachtwoord van Gmail niet meer, stom hè????

Ja, maar pas na 5 dagen ongebruikt. Zo stom, ik gebruik normaal gesproken voor alles het zelfde paswoord, maar gmail wilde dat niet, 6 was te kort, en nu weet ik dus niet meer wat ik gedaan heb...

Er zijn toch geen extra instellingen in de foon zelf toch????

M'n instellingen bij Gmail zelf ben ik niet aangeweest dus die zullen nog het zelfde zijn ga ik vanuit...

Nou, het is inmiddels gelukt, vraag me niet hoe...

Het enige is, voorheen kreeg ik mijn nieuwe mail in de map "inbox", nu komt alles in "alle berichten" onder het kopje "[gmail]". Wat moet ik doen om het allemaal gewoon weer in mijn "inbox" te krijgen????


EDIT: Wat ik nou mee maak, tijdens het lenzen in doen toch nog maar ff de mail app geopend, en ineens gaat ie zoeken naar mails en haalt alle mails die ik nog had (plus een paar nieuwe) binnen en ze belanden allemaal in m'n inbox, nu doet hij het dus ineens wel.....


Schiet mij dus maar lek...

Hacker Jonathan Zdziarski waarschuwde eerder al voor het onvolledig wissen van persoonlijke gegevens bij het uitvoeren van een Restore. Maar Apple en AT&T blijken ook hun werk niet goed te doen: refurbished iPhones die ooit ter reparatie zijn aangeboden staan eveneens vol met persoonlijke informatie.

hier misschien een oplossing om toch alles gewist te krijgen
Restore the iPhone from within iTunes.

On the “Info” tab, un-check all options so you don’t synchronize calendars, email, bookmarks, and contacts.

On the Photos, Podcasts, and Video tabs, uncheck “Sync …”.

Create 3 big playlists with at least as many songs as the storage capacity of your iPhone.

On the Music tab, select the first of your 3 playlists to sync. Make sure the storage bar at the bottom looks full after syncing.

Sync your iPhone, change to the next playlist, sync again, and repeat one last time.

This will hopefully overwrite any of the free space on your phone, helping preventing recovery of any of those love letters and bad jokes lingering from old emails. I won’t have a chance to test this anytime soon, and odds are high some fragments will survive depending on how the iPhone allocates at the file system level, but this should be more than sufficient to prevent casual recovery of sensitive stuff if you’d like to hock your old phone.

the following tutorial permanantly scrambles your Addressbook, Calendar, Notes, callhistory, voicemail, SMS, Safari, Mail and Pictures and everything else you have on your iPhone media partition.


I will explain what you have to do, but you need to know some things first.
The iPhone or iPod comes in different flavors (4gb, 8gb, 16gb and last but not least 32gb).


Although the sizes of the iPhone are different, the way the disk is partioned (divided) is the same.


You have 2 partitions (1 system that normally holds about 300mb and 1 data (music, video’s, mail, contacts,etc) that holds the rest.


What we need to do is get everything off the Data partition. How are we going to do this ?


We will use some basic commands (where you will only have to type 2) to really destroy all of your personal data.

WARNING : Only do this if you are planning to sell your iPhone or if you need to return it to Apple

This tutorial only works on a jailbroken phone !
1) If you don’t have a jailbroken iPhone, use one of my beginners guides to get it jailbroken.


2) Make surz you have installed the BSDSUBSYSTEM and the OPENSSH packages.


3) Go to our sources page and add the iPhoneFreakz.com source.


4) Open the installer and go to the iPhonefreakz category. Install the Erase Utility.


5) Connect your iPhone to your wireless network.


6) Connect with a SSH client to your iPhone (Putty, or whatever client you prefer)


7) Log in with the username root and password alpine


8) copy and paste the following command
/usr/bin/find /var/mobile/ -type f -exec /usr/bin/shred -u ‘{}’ \;

9) Wait a longggggggg time ..(it’s best you let this run and come back after some time .. )


10) Once the command is finished no one will ever find any personal information back on your iPhone.


11) Restore your iPhone and give it away (i can always use a extra iPhone or sell it now with confidence that your personal data won’t be retrieved.
