Ik ben een T-mobile klant die vanavond naar China gaat.

Vraag:
- Welke provider kan ik / moet ik in China gebruiken ?
- Heb ik in China gewoon roaming ?
- Kan ik vanuit China SMS sturen naar nederlandse nummers ?

Graag hoor ik jullie ervaringen

Ik heb er zelf een paar maanden gezeten, ik had toen nog geen iPhone.

1) China Mobile heeft het beste bereik. De andere optie is China Unicom. Je kunt een prepaid kaart kopen voor volgens mij 50RMB voor de kaart plus het tegoed dat erop staat (10RMB = 1 euro).

2) Ja, het is wel duur. Een vriend van me die langskwam kon met zijn iPhone ook data roamen, ik weet niet wat de kosten waren.

3) Ja, met je Nederlandse SIM geen probleem. Met een ChinaMobile SIM kun je wel smsjes sturen naar Nederland, maar geen berichten ontvangen vanuit Nederland. CM legt de schuld bij de Nederlandse provider en andersom... (Ik vermoed toch echt dat het bij CM ligt..)

Hieronder een stuk dat ik over bellen in China heb geschreven (in het Engels):

You can buy ChinaMobile (short: yidong 移动) prepaid cards at almost any street kiosk or store. If you buy it in the stores in Wudaokou (the university area) they will try to rip you off for a few hundred RMB. You can get a simple SIM card (Easyown, Shenzhouxing 神州行) for 20-50 RMB on top of the prepaid amount that is included.

Make sure you get a ChinaMobile card and not China Unicom. The international access number for China is +86, just add it in front of your Chinese number (if your Chinese number is 15123456789 the international number will simply be +86 15123456789).

You can get internet access including a data bundle (上网月包) with this card, but only to access web pages. If you want to access email or do other more fancy stuff, you need to have a different prepaid card: ChinaMobile M-zone, the price of the SIM should be the same (and not 300 RMB like some stores dare to ask). The M-zone cards do not allow international calls by default unlike Easyown!!! And if you want a data bundle, it can only be enabled starting from the beginning of a month. I paid 20RMB per month for a 500MB limit.

If you want to get international calls on your M-zone phone (and as a cool extra bonus feature international roaming!) you have to go to a ChinaMobile Service Center with the secret code that is included in the packaging of your SIM card, your passport and 800RMB. Of these 800RMB 300RMB will be added to your prepaid balance and 500RMB is a safety deposit.
Note that you do not need to do this with an Easyown card!

Topping up your balance can be done with cards that are sold in various denominations, most commonly 50RMB and 100RMB. You can ask the vendor to top it up for you, I never was able to understand the English menu..

If you want to call your family, you should add 12593 in front of the phone number (like: 12593 003112345678), this will get you cheaper rates (I think about 1-2 RMB/min to the Netherlands, but I'm not sure) but only works within Beijing.

You can send SMS messages to the Netherlands, but you CANNOT receive SMS messages from the Netherlands and I think the same holds for other European countries. If you call the ChinaMobile helpdesk about this, they will tell you that the problem lies with the Dutch provider, so save yourself the trouble.
