Stuck in recovery mode with Russian Steve

Hopefully someone can help:

I followed the instructions here to upgrade my first generation iPhone to 3.1 using the pwnage tool. Seemed to work fine, but I realize the problem may have started when I entered recovery mode. When I entered recovery mode, I immediately had the cartoon of steve jobs speaking russian(attached). Still, I was able via itunes 8.1 to select the custom restore file, it looked like it worked fine, went through all the steps
(extracting, restoring, verifying) with the apple logo on the phone.

And then at the end I got from itunes:
The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (10).

Immediately the cartoon was back.
I seem to remember with my new macBook Pro there was a problem in recovery mode, which is why someone else did the last jailbreak. Now I'm on my own.

IDEAS PLEASE!

Thanks anyway.
I used the custom restore created by the macbook on my mac mini with itunes 9 and it worked.
