"Fingers and Tongues" is one of the more upbeat numbers from their new release Mountain Meadows. Heavy with reverb and breathy enunciation, the triumphant track follows a galloping beat into the sunset, inadvertently waving flags of appreciation to bands like Wilco and Sunny Day Real Estate (the last minute of track has a passionate rage not unlike the tunes penned by the latter's Jeremy Enigk).

Bowling Green, Kentucky to be specific. "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" is a slide-guitar-addled bit of rock-funk that sounds like it could be used to charm snakes out of the ground. Singer Matt Shultz comes across like Jack White in full-tilt preacher mode while his band get deep into the voodoo boogie. It sets the stage for the group, who have been making fans all over thanks to opening gigs with Foals and Queens of the Stone Age. Also: they know how to make a sleeveless t-shirt look good.

France: Revolver, Leave Me Alone - Single de la semaine

Each week we find a track from an artist or a band we've been enjoying and bring it to you, for free, as our Single of the Week. "Go On, Say It" is an exemplary bit of minimalist melancholy from the Portland duo known as Blind Pilot. Acoustic guitars, brushed drums, strings, and chiming percussion combine to create a sweet bit of pleading heartbreak. The song comes from the album 3 Rounds and a Sound, and the album is a new favorite around here - working in the same areas as the Shins or Death Cab for Cutie, but with a more homespun, folk feel.

Our Discovery Download puts the focus on a different genre each week, offering up a free track we think is worth your attention. The Body Snatchers is the name taken by the underground dance producers 30Hz and Baobinga and Feeling Good, Looking Nice, Smelling Right is the first full-length to come from these beat-possessed, freak-obsessed minds. "Call Me" is an intergalactic dose of crunked-up, electro-infused dirty breaks with Sporty-O (recently signed to Lil Jon's label) adding in gold-chain-wearing rhymes and Yolanda (as heard with Bugz in the Attic) arriving to anchor the track to the earth with her swooning vocal hook.

"Building a Boat" is a track off of Terminal Romance, the new album of solid, red-blooded, honest-to-goodness real rock 'n' roll from Matt Mays and El Torpedo. We're' not hiding it - we love this guy. The riffs on this particular song could be used to either cut glass or to insulate a small house - such is the nature of their sharpness and density. But a riff is nothing without a tune underneath and Mays and company have devised one that is sneering bit of empowerment for anyone who still believes it's okay to put on their favorite song, go nuts, raise their fists, and howl at the moon.

Cajun Dance Party has been on our radar for a while now thanks to some of the gloriously ragged tunes on the band's debut, The Colourful Life. You may have heard the more urgent guitar pop on "The Next Untouchable", but this tune takes a different tack. The biggest switch comes in the song's first half when keyboard player Vicky Freund takes a turn at the vocals. Starting like a dreamy, indie-rock waltz, the track shows flickers of atmosphere in the bells and the slightly noir-like twang of the guitar. Halfway through, singer Daniel Blumberg takes over to introduce the grandiose, chaotic second phase. It's a harmonious bit of moody respite from our new London-based faves.

Weliswaar geen gratis nummertjes van iTunes (die heb ik gisteren al gegeven). Maar voor de liefhebbers van Spinvis en Simon Vinkenoog is er een gratis EP te downloaden. Ter gelegenheid van de 80ste verjaardag van Simon Vinkenoog wordt er een boek uitgegeven met daarbij muziek van Spinvis. Spinvis heeft muziek gemaakt bij teksten van Simon Vinkenoog en zegt hierover

In de vroege jaren zestig ontdekte Simon dat zijn poëzie nog beter werkte als ze werd opgenomen op plaat of band. Met zijn eigen stem als uniek instrument. In plaats van het keurig oplezen van de gedrukte woorden, ontwikkelde hij een kunstvorm die alles te maken had met vrijheid van improvisatie, met bezwerende woordritmes en vrije klank. Er zijn honderden banden met interviews en optredens. Deze tapes vormen een kronkelend pad door 50 jaar Nederlandse radio. Ik heb geselecteerd op de muzikaliteit van de opnames. Een vervormde microfoon, een hese stem die zich vergeefs verstaanbaar probeert te maken, onverstaanbaar gefluister…allemaal muziek. Deze elementen (het woord, de stem, de tijd, de opname) waren het bronmateriaal. Het was buitengewoon dankbaar om daar muziek bij te maken. Ik heb er zeer geïnspireerd aan gewerkt.

Scars on Broadway is the group started up by System of a Down members Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan who insist this is more of a side-project than proof that System of a Down is no more. Either way, it's a good thing as Scars on Broadway rule in their own particular way. "They Say" is driven by some knuckle-dragging riffs and Malakian's sneering, Johnny Rotten-esque vocals and crazed guitar lines. It's a blazing track and we hope you enjoy it.

The easy tempo combined with singer Nathan Ferraro's clear, light tenor and Mike Wise's rhythm guitar - reminiscent of The Edge on occasion - creates an iresistable melancholy, the perfect setting for an afternoon drive in late summer. The chorus abruptly shifts gears and propels this unpretentious earnestness towards its unexpected sudden ending. If this kind of well-structured songwriting is anything to go by, we can't wait for the album to drop.

Neil Cowley is the pianist who drives the music to a new place on this track from his instrumental trio's second album, Loud . . Louder . . . Stop!. Cowley was poised from an early age to become a classical pianist, but his love of jazz and the immediacy of soul and rock hit him hard and the music he makes now explodes with energy and vitality. It's soul-jazz with an indie-rock complexity. Just have a listen.

Ohw ja, downloaden van torrent sites is verboden... in Amerika... Er is in Nederland nog geen wet die het downloaden van muziek van torrent sites verbiedt. Het eigen gebruik wordt tot nu toe gewoon gewoon gedoogd door de regering.
